The conservation of the nature reserve begins more than 40 years ago thanks to the love for nature of the Londoño Jaramillo family, who allowed the coffee and banana plantations to become a semi-natural forest, supporting their reforestation with the planting of trees natives of the region, which allowed to attract and concentrate a high density of fauna to this oasis surrounded by mountains with fully agricultural crops.
Tinamú Birding is located in Caldas at 18Km. from Manizales (30´) San Peregrino, submerged in the Coffee Cultural Landscape and in a tropical rain forest of 11 Ha. between 1,200 and 1,300 meters above sea level. with a warm climate of 25 ° C, home to more than 270 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies and a wide variety of plants and trees, a place that since 2014 offers a high-level service in birdwatching resting in comfortable rooms with a beautiful decoration alluding to birds, enjoying the aroma of the coffee, typical Colombian gastronomy and the homey attention of our local community staff, to start observing and photographing birds in lush gardens, bird feeders and walking private paths of 3Km. to appreciate unique forest species and further enrich the great travel experience of nature and bird lovers.
There have been registered 270 bird species distributed in 49 families. The most numerous families are: flycatchers (Tyrannidae) with 41, tanagers (Thraupidae) with 25, hummingbirds (Trochilidae) with 21 and warblers (Parulidae) with 18 species.
Of the total of 270 species, 234 are resident, 36 are borealis migratory, 4 endemic. 13 near endemic and 2 vulnerable. Colombia is the country of birds with more than 1950 species; Caldas has about 50% of birds of Colombia, and Manizales has 450 (approx.) thanks to the different ecosystems and climatic zones between 170 and 5.400 m.a.s.l., that provide high biodiversity.
More than 170 species of birds travel to the country from the north of the continent escaping from the winter, these birds are called migratory and come to Colombia usually between September and October and return back to the north of the continent between April and May.
